This spring, the mail brought lots of good news to Nearby Nature.
In the course of three months, we received a total of $24,815
in grant support!
Our most exciting news is that we have received $20,000 from the Gray Family
Fund of the Oregon Community Foundation to create an interactive Learnscape
at our site in Alton Baker Park. Our Learnscape will be a model for sustainable
living practices as well as an outdoor classroom. We’ll build a bike
rack, create a user-friendly composting area, and develop landscaping that
facilitates energy and water conservation. We’ll plant gardens that produce
food as well as awaken the senses. We’ll create nature-themed artwork
and an open-air shelter. Our space will inspire curiosity, imagination, and
stewardship. We’re very excited to begin this project and look forward
to working with lots of community partners as we develop the site. Let us know
if you want to get involved.
In other good news, in April, we were pleased to receive a Tourism Special
Projects Grant of $2,350 from Lane County to create a programs brochure and
to enhance our website. Work on these projects is underway now.
In May, thanks to support from the Harlow Neighbors, we received a $1,500 Eugene ‘08
Neighborhood Grant from the City of Eugene to create an information kiosk at
our site in Alton Baker Park. Work has begun on this exciting project, which
we plan to finish by the Eugene ‘08 Olympic Trials. A big thanks to Square
Deal Lumber in Springfield for providing kiosk materials at a significant discount.

At the beginning of June, we got one last bit of good news. For the second
year in a row, we have received funding from the Lane County Cultural Coalition
to offer scholarships for our Kalapuya Quest school nature walks in Alton Baker
Park. Thanks to this $965 grant, we will have 10+ scholarships to offer during
the 2008-2009 school year.
